His friends call him Gerry and made fun of him once when a reporter mistakenly reported that he prefers to be called "GerARD". To Americans it sounds closer to Jarrod or Jared but it's not really because of the rolling "r". That is completely "foreign" to the way his Mum says it (and I've heard her say it) - the closest I can come to spelling it out is JA(as in Jack)-rud (with a gently rolled "r") with emphasis on the first syllable. We Americans tend to say JurARD with the emphasis on the second syllable. Actually that pronunciation is the American one which Gerry doesn't like.
